International Women's Day (IWD)

The IWD this year is a serious matter. Ladies are excited, men are offended, and children could not care any less. Personally and to be honest I just knew it was women’s day courtesy of a HR Memo lining up activities to celebrate the day. So the men keep asking, “What exactly are you people celebrating? Is there a Men’s day? What’s so special about women’s day?” (*tongue out*)

I gave my own little defence by saying they would have a men’s day two days to Father’s day (covers face). Abi, seeing as Women’s day is two days before Mother’s day. Another man said "it is all this attention given to women that has caused problems in the world, reduced the level of submission and increased the rate of divorce." Me I don’t know about that one!

All I know is; why should Women not be celebrated?  Some women support their families, some women run companies, some run reputable businesses, Some women are outliers, some women are bread winners. And perhaps that deserves to be celebrated, but that’s not the aim of this post and neither is it the aim of the Women’s day.

According to International Women’s Day Site

“Annually on 8 March, thousands of events are held throughout the world to inspire women and celebrate achievements. A global web of rich and diverse local activity connects women from all around the world ranging from political rallies, business conferences, government activities and networking events through to local women's craft markets, theatric performances, fashion parades and more. Shikena!

Personally, I’ve hinged on the part that says inspire women. And I’m glad I had told a man this morning that the aim was to make women realize they could be responsible citizens in their own right. Some women are great achievers and this should inspire other women including moi.

So now, with understanding, this is wishing all women around the globe, a Happy Women’s day. May this day inspire all women unto greatness in every way.

  3. Well written Gbemmy. But for the 2nd to the last paragraph of your treatise, I would have wondered why really there should be a Women's Day. If Women's Day is marked just because some women are breadwinners and support their families both nuclear and extended, then there is much more reason to have a Men's Day. If you say women do a lot, which I have not doubt about, then men do much more.

But like I said, the thoughts you expressed on the 2nd to the last paragraph of your writing restrains me from further argument. And to say the least, I think that more opportunities to inspire women globally should be created. Many woman live in the lower ebbs of life not knowing what opportunities exist for them to excel. I hope that one day, I will create a vibrant platform for inspiring women globally!
